Zonta Eclub France 1 Lumières is a club that is part of Zonta International non-profit organization standing for woman's rights. Zonta International has more than 30, 000 members in more than 1,100 clubs in 63 countries all over the world.
Zonta Eclub France 1 Lumières is the first online club in France and, as a member of this club, I offered my expertise as a UX/UI Designer and Web Designer to create a website following the Double Diamond Design thinking process.
As the sole UX Designer for the Zonta E-Club France 1 Lumières website, I played a pivotal role in every stage of the project, ensuring its success from start to finish. Collaborating closely with Marie-Anne, the dedicated e-club founder with 15 years of Zonta International membership, provided deep insights into challenges, goals, and future aspirations. This collaboration enabled me to infuse the website design with authentic perspectives.
Additionally, I collaborated seamlessly with a developer and graphic designer. Working alongside the developer, I translated the design into a functional WordPress website, ensuring its efficiency. Concurrently, I partnered with the graphic designer to synchronize visual elements, creating a unified aesthetic aligned with the club's identity.
Throughout the project, I applied a user-centered design approach to create an online platform that not only met the club's objectives but also provided an enriching experience for visitors interested in women's empowerment and community service.
My contributions encompassed a wide range of responsibilities in the project's various stages:

1• Limited Brand Awareness
In many countries, Zonta International and its critical mission of advocacy is not well known or understood. Educating more people about Zonta International is necessary for success
2• Advocacy Efforts
Although Zonta International has strong global relationships with the United Nations and Council of Europe, advocacy efforts at the district and country levels are often not as coordinated as they could be. A common approach to advocacy, customized as needed, should be established.
3• Financial Sustainability
The effects of a decline in membership mean that additional revenue opportunities need to be explored.
4• Young professionals minority
which poses a potential gap in engaging and inspiring younger generations to actively participate in our mission.
With limited brand awareness, our online strength becomes a chance to spread our mission widely.
In advocacy, scattered efforts can unify through our new digital approach.
The decline in membership sparks exploration of online funding sources.
The chance to leverage our online club format for recruiting young members offers a pathway to bridge generational gaps and cultivate a more diverse and inclusive community dedicated to Zonta International's mission.
Based on the findings, my responsibilities encompassed not just creating a website for improved visibility, but also devising new funding sources, recruiting young professionals and strengthening advocacy efforts. This multifaceted approach aimed to address the challenges by maximizing our impact and ensuring the e-club’s success.
Who is this website for?
To become more visible, the club is seeking new members to join and help create positive change through active efforts and collaborative idea-sharing. The goal is to enhance Zonta International through dynamic actions and creative thinking.
Targeting young professionals aligns perfectly with the dynamic nature of the online club and Zonta International's objectives. The digital platform offers convenience, requiring less time commitment while ensuring smooth interactions. This approach caters to the tech-savvy tendencies and fast-paced lives of the younger generation, making active engagement in gender equality and women's empowerment initiatives accessible and appealing.
Marie-Anne (Founder) and I embarked on a comprehensive research journey. We engaged with 10 individuals between 20 to 35 years old with different backgrounds, seeking to uncover the factors that inspire and engage them in joining an online non-profit organization.
Through these interviews, our aim was to discern the specific topics and actions that resonate with our audience. This research serves as the foundation for tailoring our website structure, advocacy efforts, and fundraising strategies to effectively cater to the desires and aspirations of our audience, fostering a more impactful and engaging experience that encourages young professionals' recruitment.
Seeking inspiration and awareness about the actuality of gender equality challenges
Would rather join an online club than in person one to balance work and personal commitments
Are willing to enhance skills, share their knowledge, and create meaningful connections through club activities like brainstorming sessions and conferences
Want to see tangible results that contribute to positive change, allowing them to feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment in their efforts
Age: 28
Status: Single
Occupation: Graphic Designer
"I aspire to contribute to an online club, creating gender equality impact, while enjoying flexible engagement, skill growth, and a strong sense of community"
Pain points:
I seek initiatives with tangible impact and a deeper sense of purpose, as past efforts lacked visible results and occasionally left me feeling disconnected despite my passion.
Goals:
I aim to join an online club that suits my dynamic lifestyle, providing flexibility for my schedule and location, while contributing my skills, learning about current gender equality challenges, and making a concrete impact on women's empowerment
Prior to crafting the website's ideation process, the founder and I collaboratively designed a purposeful experience tailored for young professionals. This experience aimed to nurture community, engagement, knowledge-sharing, and impactful contributions. Through brainstorming, we explored innovative platforms, interactive events, and projects aligned with young professionals' aspirations to raise awareness about gender equality and women empowerment challenges.
Here are the implementations we did to respond to young professional expectations when joining a club:
ZedEx:
Monthly Talk shows (inspired by TedEx) of inspiring people fighting for women’s rights and gender equality to talk about their actions and the challenges they are facing.
Poster of a Zedex we have organized with Annick Billon, Senator of Vendee region in France.
Creation of committees within the team for each member to use their strengths and feel useful for the benefit of the non-profit
Internal workshops are done by members about communication, Marketing, Fundraising, and Advocacy in order to share knowledge of their expertise and learn about other disciplines.
• A monthly Brainstorming session between e-club members
• Creation of a Zonta Land platform on TOPIA where members can gather anytime and have fun together
• Yearly gathering in person
• Monthly happy hour on Zonta Land
Having progressed through ideation, action implementation, and fostering a robust community built on knowledge exchange, we can now bring our narrative to life on the website and create its information architecture and feature prioritization.
As the first e-club in France, we were allowed to change the colors if we wanted to.
After discussing with the graphic designer, we decided to have our own color palette to have a modern, fresh, and dynamic image to our website and stand out from Zonta International.
What I did well
Throughout this project, I successfully collaborated with the founder, developers, and graphic designers to address the challenges faced by our Zonta International e-club. Our joint efforts led to a comprehensive approach to tackling reduced leadership engagement, advocacy efforts, and financial sustainability. By leveraging our diverse skill sets, we ideated and implemented impactful actions that resonated with our target audience of young professionals.
Together, we crafted an interactive engagement hub, organized engaging virtual events, and designed an aesthetically appealing website that showcased our achievements and mission effectively. This collaborative approach helped in attracting new members and fostering a sense of belonging among existing ones.
What I would do differently
Looking back on this project, I would consider initiating more frequent check-ins with the collaborative team, including developers and graphic designers, to maintain a cohesive and integrated approach. By fostering a more iterative feedback loop, we could address any potential design or functionality discrepancies earlier in the process.
Additionally, I would explore implementing a pilot phase to test and gather feedback on our solutions before full-scale implementation. This iterative testing could lead to refinements that enhance user engagement and satisfaction. Overall, a more structured feedback loop and user involvement would be key areas of emphasis for future projects.
